SAN FRANCISCO HETCH HETCHY TUOLUMNE WATER GRAB

(6-10-2003)

For those not in the San Francisco area: Please call, fax, or email the SF Board of Supervisors today if possible, or tomorrow (see info at bottom).
Thanks!

Tomorrow, come to a San Francisco Board of Supervisors hearing City to speak for Hetch Hetchy and Yosemite National Park.

The San Francisco Public Utilities Department wants to add a new 60" diameter output pipe to O'Shaunessy Dam, WITHOUT doing an Environmental Impact Report.

The project will divert more water from the upper Tuolumne River, a federally designated Wild and Scenic river in Yosemite National Park. The effects of this diversion on fish and wildlife needs to be studied and possibly mitigated.

Furthermore, the PUC's $3.6 billion Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) will enable even bigger diversions from the Tuolumne River. The PUC wants to deliver the new water to the South Bay for new sprawl developments.

The PUC says that the purpose of the project is to fix a problem with silt in the water. However, it has not demonstrated that adding a new outflow pipe will address the problem, or even that a problem exists. In fact, the PUC's most recent Water Quality Report says Hetch Hetchy water is among the most silt-free in the state.

Come to the the hearing and ASK THE SUPERVISORS FOR THE FOLLOWING:

-- Do an EIR to determine the effects of the stated diversion on wildlife and the Park.

-- Do a programatic EIR to determine the environmental damage that this project will enable when the CIP is completed. This includes increased sprawl, effects on fisheries, and effects on river rafting and other recreational activities.

This project is not about silt or turbity. It is about taking more water from Yosemite without environmental review.

Tuesday June 10, 3 pm Board of Supervisors Chambers, City Hall.
