FEDS MOVE TO PRIVATIZE PUBLIC LANDS' JOBS

(7-2-2003)

The Federal Government is moving forward on multiple fronts to privatize jobs throughout the National Park Service and other government agencies. The ability of the public to monitor and to have a say in what happens in our National Parks, including Yosemite, will be even further diluted and threatened by this.

DOES PRIVATIZATION SAVE TAXPAYERS MONEY AND IMPROVE PUBLIC LAND PROTECTION?

There is no indication of this. On the contrary, there are lots of indications of the opposite as the race to the bottom continues. At the same time, this privatization would further enable a few priviledged individuals to PICK YOUR POCKET and STUFF EVEN MORE MONEY IN THEIRS. The profit incentive would place itself even more in the way of and above protection of our natural and cultural heritage.

The public's ability to monitor what is going on in the parks would be further constrained by the ability of private corporations to block access to records. Many records would become private, rather than public, and thus closed to public review.

OUR PARKS SHOULD NOT BE CASH COWS FOR PRIVATE COMPANIES!!!
