The Friends of Yosemite Valley (FoYV) is a citizen organization working to protect and restore Yosemite for present and future generations. Yosemite is a living natural wonder, and it belongs to you and all Americans. It is a place of stunning beauty, but also a place which has been commercialized and overdeveloped. In recent years a broad public consensus emerged that the time for restoration in Yosemite had come. Today Yosemite is at a crossroads. Contrary to public desires, a new wave of commercial development plans currently threatens the park like no time in its history. Since 1997 plans to expand hotels and restaurants, widen roads, add parking, add commercial diesel busses and other new development have been proposed. Citizen condemnation and lawsuits have followed. Developments are animated by an unprecedented quarter billion dollars in public money. Hundreds have joined our growing and uncompromising effort to oppose new development. Today is a hopeful time in another way, as citizen pressure mounts behind a court-ordered Merced River Management Plan could halt Yosemite's development push, and lead to unprecedented protection and restoration. We hope you will subscribe to our Updates list, learn more by reading recent Updates or planning timeline , and to see what you can do to help. |
